It's a feeling that Heller understands from his often-dangerous adventures around the world. "Our hero, Hig, is very vulnerable every day," Heller tells Fresh Air's Dave Davies. The Dog Stars follows a man named Hig who survives a superflu that kills most of humanity - including his wife and unborn child. But as the novel took a post-apocalyptic turn, he found himself relying on his real-life scrapes and survival skills. ![]() With his debut novel, The Dog Stars, Heller returned to fiction - his first love. As an expedition kayaker, Heller was already the author of many works of travel and outdoor-adventure writing. When Peter Heller sat down to work on his first novel, all he knew was that he wanted to have the experience of writing without knowing the ending. Together, and by calling in a bunch of former BP cryptographers as reinforcements, they get Beth out and decode the messages (the titular Rose Code) needed to identify and arrest the traitor. Years later, Beth calls upon the other women for help to get her out before she's scheduled for a lobotomy. The womens' friendship also splinters at the end due to Beth not warning the others (because they take an oath of secrecy) about a raid that kills Mab's husband and child. I enjoyed this as an add on to the original book. Even so, it contains the same big sense of fun, sexy times and the big strong personalities of these characters. It is about how Chloe and Bennett are challenged to fit their lives and careers together. OPINION: This novella is for fans of BEAUTIFUL BASTARD. Planning a trip together tempts fate which has caused problems every time the two have tried to travel together. THE STORY: A year after BEAUTIFUL BASTARD, Bennett finds that Chloe’s burgeoning career and his own obligations can be difficult on a relationship. A year after the events of BEAUTIFUL BASTARD, we get to see that the HEA is something that has to be worked at but is real. FINAL DECISION: I love these extra moments with beloved characters. ![]() ![]() ![]() Their lawyer, Bree Knoester from Brave Legal, said children with all medical conditions should be able to go to camp.
